ADMISSIONS

Highly qualified individuals with engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, geology or related backgrounds are encouraged to apply to the program.   Students seeking Admission must satisfy the following criteria:

  • GRE Scores
  • TOEFL Score (for foreign applicants only)
  • TWE score (for foreign applicants only whose medium of instruction is not English, minimum score required 5.0)
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, Mathematics or related field
  • A course in Differential Equations
  • Knowledge of Undergraduate Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics is necessary

Washington University has recently established the McDonnell International Scholars Academy.  Students from a select list of 15 schools (in China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, S. Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand)  may apply. In addition to this application, you need to apply to the Academy also (click here).  McDonnell International Academy Scholars will be teamed with a select group of Doctoral Students at the University and will receive additional stipends. If you are unable to complete an online application, you may file electronically by opening the attached e-mail application, completing it, and returning it to us via e-mail. This will be considered an electronic application, and will have a  $40.00 application fee.  

If you still prefer paper, you may print out the e-mail attachment, or download the form from our web site. You may then mail it to us, along with the $40.00 fee and required documentation, and we will process it for you.  

Required documentation: a personal statement, three letters of recommendation (from individuals familiar with your academic or research abilities), results from the GRE, and original certified transcripts from previous academic institutions. For foreign institutions, the department requires literal translations of the grades; applicants should not attempt to convert foreign grades into any other grading system.  Applicants whose native language is not English must submit test scores for both the TOEFL and TWE.
