Instrument and Laboratory Guidelines

The guidelines are in place not only to provide a safe environment for users but to also guarantee that all users are treated equally and fairly.

1.                 All WUStL safety policies will be followed at all times. Each prospective user must go through a lab specific safety training before using the lab.

2.                 Prospective users will not have access to the instruments until completion of instrument training which is provided only by the lab manager.

3.                 Prospective users must reserve an instrument and a time slot via the on-line calendars.  Use of an instrument without a prior reservation is not allowed.

4.                 Each user group may reserve an instrument in advance for up to 10 hours per instrument per week.  If any one group reaches their time allotment per instrument they may request additional time by contacting the lab manager.  Additional time may be given if there is space available and on a day to day basis.

5.                 Each user must sign the instrument log book located at each instrument station. Users of instruments that do not sign in maybe debarred.

6.                 Each user needs to handle the disposal of their waste appropriately.  There is a list of incompatible chemicals in the lab.  If your sample contains any one of the items on the list please remove the waste from the lab after your analysis is done.  This will insure that someone else will not accidentally dispose of an incompatible chemical in the same waste bottle.  Please see Waste Removal Procedures for more information or contact the lab manager.

7.                 Some consumables are provided at a cost for users.  Users must sign the inventory sheet with the description and quantity of the consumable item. Non Env Core Users should fill in the form prior to use of the Instruments.

8.                 There will be no sample preparation done in the shared instrument lab.

9.                 Storage of items such as glassware, chemicals, PPE, and any other items not necessary for maintenance of the instruments is prohibited.  Do not leave any personal items or data disks/notebooks etc in the lab.  There is no guarantee that these items will still be there when you return.

10.            Be respectful of others who use the lab.  Clean up the area you use before you leave.

Your cooperation in respecting the above guidelines is appreciated.  It is my hope that each user will be guaranteed a well run, safe environment in which they can work.
