Undergraduate Research Experiences in Environmental Engineering Science

The Environmental Engineering Science Program at Washington University in St. Louis is pleased to announce the availability of ten summer research fellowships through our Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) in Environmental Engineering Science Program. This 10-week REU Program, which is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), gives qualified undergraduate science and engineering students an opportunity to explore their interests in environmental science and engineering by conducting independent research under the guidance of one of the participating faculty members and participating in a variety of structured group activities designed to increase their understanding of research practice and improve their written and oral communication skills.

For example, the REU fellows will participate in a series of workshops on the role of study design and data analysis in environmental engineering research. In addition, REU students will learn how data collection and analysis are used in environmental engineering practice by visiting several local facilities that are engaged in pollution abatement, water purification, or environmental characterization activities.

Descriptions of potential research topics are available. For technical questions regarding the program, please contact Dr. Brian Wrenn.

Financial Support

The REU in Environmental Engineering Science Program will provide the following for all participants:
a $4,000 stipend for the 10-week program, on-campus housing in student residence halls.  In addition, the Program will reimburse selected students for travel to a regional or national meeting of one of the professional societies that serves the environmental engineering community (e.g., AWMA, WEF, AIChE, ASCE, AAAR) to present the results of their research.

This program is limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Applicants should be enrolled in an engineering or science program with sophomore or junior standing and a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale. Students who have received their B.S. prior to August 2003 are not eligible. Female and minority students are strongly encouraged to apply.
